Peggy was born in Cylinder, Iowa on October 10, 1930, the second of four children to George and Josephine Slagle. During her youth she lived in both Iowa and Washington until settling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1944. She attended St. Roberts Elementary, Shorewood High School and Milwaukee School of Business. In 1946, she met the love of her life, Bob Mescher, of New Vienna and began a courtship that ended in marriage on December 29, 1952 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In June of 1955, they moved from Milwaukee to the eNVy of Iowa, New Vienna, which became her home until her death. She loved living in New Vienna and loved the people who supported her so much, especially after Bob’s untimely death in 1999 and throughout her battle with cancer. Peggy was a homemaker and raised five children. She was active in her community and a member of: the Altar Society, Mother’s Club, Dyersville Community Hospital and the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary. In 1970, she became employed at the Dyersville Community Hospital as a Nursing assistant; she loved taking care of her patients and developed many close friendships. In 1992, she retired and began her favorite pastime of traveling, both domestically and abroad. Peggy traveled throughout the U.S. to visit cousins and abroad to Australia, Italy, Germany, Ireland, and cruised down the Rhine and the Danube. Her dream included a trip to the Greek Isles, but was unable to fulfill that dream. Peggy valued her family and friends and loved the times spent with her children and grandchildren. She was fondly called “Granny Bird”.

Peggy is survived by 5 children: Kathy (Bob) Casey, Barrington, IL, Janet El Khatib, Dubuque, IA, Pat (Kim) Mescher, West Des Moines, IA, Tony (Inger) Mescher, New Berlin, WI, and Bob (Jeff Snyder) Mescher, Point Pleasant, NJ.
